There were children, under the authority of their parents and adults, who had to assume authority on their own and hopefully had been gradually prepared to do so by their parents. This artificial category, where kids aren't beginning to move into adulthood and instead just sit around and whine and feel entitled, is a very strange one.

I have friends who work with in juvenile hall (I am not suggesting your offspring need anything like that) and they teach parents that there is no inalienable right to privacy, that if a teen is acting like a brat or misusing the internet or possibly doing drugs, you can just take his bedroom door off the hinges to keep track of him--and not feel guilty at all.

I was one of those parents who was scared of my 16-year old daughter. She was more sure of herself than I was and I didn't think I had any right to rein her in. Every argument where I was coming from the viewpoint of "safety" she would make into an argument about "trust." I remember Jim Dobson responding to this argument with, "No, you're right, I don't trust you. I wouldn't trust myself at that age."

Anyhoo, my daughter went from "You don't trust me" to "Teenagers shouldn't be allowed so much freedom" the minute she married a man with two teenagers who crawled out the window one night to see two guys they had just met at an airport. I had to laugh at the change in her attitude!

BTW, somebody I read recently said, "Asking God 'Why' is like pulling up an empty bucket." He seldom answers that question.

Looks like I may be able to comment on your blog again, now that I have a new one of my own.

Love,
Jessica www.hisscribe.blogspot.comJessica Renshawhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06772797916085422429noreply@blogger.com
